CRAFTING ON A BUDGET

Finding your creative mojo can be a difficult task in its own right, after many
attempts at numerous crafting agenda’s I am left with supplies galore and very few completed projects. Being diversified can be entertaining to some degree but will inevitably leave you dissatisfied not to mention the large financial pitfall if you decide your newest undertaking is not really for you. A good suggestion is to examine all of your interests first without making a single purchase, investigate the ins and outs of
each area of interest, via the Internet, your friends or even at your local bookstore but limit your self to two areas at a time or you will get bogged down and overwhelmed. Once you have narrowed your creative search down to you final selections then start looking at the financial aspect of entering into this new venture, going to my local craft store was a real eye opener for me (have champagne taste and a beer budget)!
My newest undertaking is scrapbooking, what a wonderful way to enhance your photos and tell a story all at once! I discovered this was a hidden interest when going
to my local discount store to purchase a small album for my new baby’s pictures, this small album had printed papers with borders and embellishments already put together!
Pre-conceived pages create an environment for ease in picture placement but leave little room for true creativity or the ability to let the pictures speak through your inter-pretation. I just love the concept but honestly with the large selection of scrapbooking supplies available and the cost of obtaining them, I could not financially undertake this endeavor, until I let my creativity go to work. I am now able to create wonderful photo stories at a fraction of the cost.
Basic materials needed to create a photo story (all items can be found at any local discount store). The Album is a three ring binder, sheet protectors and card stock for picture placement. Framing for photos were made out of greeting cards received for the baby shower ( I also purchased cards that were on sale, 10/$1.00 that produced a lot of framing options as well as embellishment possibilities. The colored envelopes provided with the cards make great background effects). An small razor knife to cut frames and details, a metal ruler is advisable and a cutting surface (Flexible cutting boards can be found in kitchen gadget section of department store). Alphabet stickers to personalize pages, you can also find self sticking phrases and embellishments at most discount stores. Craft edging scissors provide unique looks and are around $1.00 a pair. Acid free glue to attach photos and frames to card stock.
Begin your photo story with one sheet of card stock, decide how many photos are to be placed on your page I recommend no more than three in order to leave room for phrases, names and/or embellishments. If using a greeting card for a frame remove the back of the card, then cut the internal portion of card leaving the exterior border in tact, create unique frames by cutting around details of card. Place frame over photo for sizing if frame is to large you can add colored envelope under frame for dimension and filling (cut center of envelope out so the fame can be placed on top of your photo). If you would like your pages to have color backgrounds instead of white you can purchase scrapbooking card stock, stationary paper, I have used gift bags as well as wrapping paper glued to my card stock for background effects and then place frames & photos on top.
I recommend only adhering photos on one side of the page and then placing in your sheet protector your next photo page would be the reverse in the same sleeve. Now that I have suggested basics it’s time to let your creativity flow! Remember limit yourself to a small box of supplies and don’t take on to much at one time this is a relaxing and fun craft that allows you a trip down memory lane, creative freedom and a chance to make a photo journal that is unique and timeless. Enjoy your journey!
